This weekend marked a huge goal achievement for me this year. I conquered three obstacle races this year! Mud Hero was the third race of the year and took place at Albion Hills just northwest of Toronto. I signed up for the 2pm heat with two friends from Twitter. Sadly, neither of them could run the race so I knocked this one out of the ballpark all by myself.
I rented a zipcar (which is really a lifesaving membership at times) and headed up to the course around 11am on Saturday. I got there fairly early, parked in the furthest lot from the course so I had a nice little walk in. I fuelled up with Opus before throwing my bag into bag check and I was ready to go. I found the starting line and a boat load of people waiting to start and filed in. I didn’t wait for my heat at 2pm and jumped in at 1:30pm instead.
I even found these guys below. I recognized three guys from University. They called themselves the B Team because the A team couldn’t be there. They had women’s white shorts from Walmart and knee pads on. I was actually slightly jealous of the knee pads.
Ok so here is my race recap. I even brought my iPhone in a ziplock baggy along for the ride. I was a little scared as I dunked into the first water obstacle but the baggy held up despite the pictures getting muddier and muddier. I completely missed a couple of obstacles due to not being able to wipe the mud off the baggy.
Obstacle #1: Log Under – the key here was getting as waterlogged as possible so when you started running again your shoes would make squishing noises 😉
Obstacle #2: Over & Unders – we had to scale walls and then roll under a beam. I was so proud of my upper body strength allowing me to jump up, throw a leg over place my foot on top and then jump down. At Warrior Dash I was timid and sat on the top and swung down. This time I was jumping up and over. I was getting a bit frustrated with the people in front of me who were crawling under the beam. The key was to roll which was much faster. 🙂
Obstacle #3: They called this obstacle Deep Woods. I call it Random Wall – this was in the middle of the trail in the forest. I like jumping over walls. Makes me feel bad ass.
Obstacle #4: Car Park – Run over cars. Feel bad ass.
Obstacle #5: Cargo Net. Funtimes.com
Obstacle #7: Spider Webs. These seemed to take forever and wouldn’t end. You had to be careful of the person in front of you. If they let go of a web it would sling mud back in your face. Follow at a distance.
Obstacle #8: Hero Wall – Scale a wall, jump over. Easy enough 😉
Obstacle #9: This was listed as a surprise on the course map. I call it Crawl On Hard Ground. Cut up knees.
Obstacle #10: This was a bridge with a bit of water shooting onto it. Not really an obstacle per se…
Obstacle #11: Water Slide into mud pit. Best obstacle by far.
Obstacle #11: Tipsy Turvy – climb on top of a cargo net that was flat across a structure. Fun. The trick was to hold onto the beam in the middle and walk your feet across.
Obstacle #12: The next obstacle listed was camo crawl but I can’t remember doing this one. I think it was a balance beam instead.
Obstacle #13: Firehall Wall Slide. Climb wall, slide down. So fun. I need more fireman’s poles in my life. Don’t make that one dirty folks.
Obstacle #14: Lake Run – walk slowly through waist deep water.
Obstacle #15: Hero Slides – big bouncy castle slide. fun but I could’ve done with a more hardcore obstacle 🙂 or water on the slide.
Obstacle #16: Mud Crawl – one last mud pit for crawling fun 🙂
My official time was 50 mins 27 secs!!
I’m so happy I finished my goal of competing in 3 obstacle races this year. I feel more bad ass, accomplished and happy with my training and abilities. I can’t wait to rock more in 2014!
